Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was acquitted and discharged by the High Court today (15 September) after the prosecution applied to discontinue four charges against him.

Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin allowed the prosecution’s application, which was made by Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib, to discontinue the case under Section 254(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Muhyiddin Yassin discharged from bribery and money laundering charges

The charges included one count of using his position to obtain RM200 million in bribes and three money laundering charges involving the same amount, according to Harian Metro.

He was previously charged with using his position as Prime Minister and BERSATU president to obtain RM200 million in bribes for the party from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd in connection with the Jana Wibawa project.

The alleged offence took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Perdana Putra Building, Putrajaya, between 1 March 2020 and 20 August 2021.

Muhyiddin still faces three other charges

The charge was brought under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The Pagoh MP also faced three charges of receiving RM200 million in proceeds from unlawful activities from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd. The money was allegedly deposited into BERSATU’s AmBank and CIMB Bank accounts in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur between February 2021 and July 2022.

However, Muhyiddin still faces three other charges of allegedly using his position to obtain RM25.3 million in bribes for BERSATU from three companies, namely Nepturis Sdn Bhd, Mamfor Sdn Bhd, and KCJ Engineering Sdn Bhd, as well as from Azman, in connection with the Jana Wibawa project.
